"Moving back to Colorado after a year in Kansas"

"Note Mom was calling Dad "Joe" this early in their marriage, in later years she called him "Mike",
( By Martha Ellsworth)

I must have taken cold in one breast as it was hard and hot and pained a lot, it’s a wonder the baby wasn’t sick as I let him nurse on it to. When morning came Joe took off the cover or inspection plate he called it and found a ball of strings and melted rubber in a wad just under it, the hot rubber must have prevented the strings from scattering into the oil pan, for the oil looked clean, there was nothing to do but take out all three bands and get the right kind of lining. Joe got them ready and hiked back to a town we had passed through a ways back to get them fixed. The baby myself and old Mitts stayed in the car and waited, when he returned it didn’t take long to put them in place, we fixed something to eat before we started out again, it didn’t prove to difficult to get the motor going but it was hard work turning the crank. We were on our way again about noon, the gas tank was under the front seat so we had to get out while it was filled, this we always did at the first gas station we came to and it would last for a days travel. When we got to Wichita Kansas the people were quarantined in every block in town due to the high death rate of Polio to try to bring it under control, we had to stay all night which we were allowed to do in the park, I said a silent prayer for the safety of our baby son, we were not in contact with anyone, only open air though I was almost afraid to breath and we kept the baby inside the car. It was flat country now and next night we stayed in Garden City Kansas, then on to Holly Colorado. I was always thirsty especially when I fed the baby it seemed to be easier if I had a drink. Water in this place was mineral artesian and smelled like rotten eggs. I thought Joe was playing a trick on me as he stood and watched as he handed me the cup from the bucket he had just come with, he said that was all there was. I don’t know how people could drink it, I just couldn’t. Next day we traveled all the way to Florence Colorado, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, not far from Canyon City Colorado. We would try to make it all the rest of the way, to finish the trip when we started out again, this meant we would have to climb up over Monarch Pass, then the highest in the Continental Divide, But the shorter amount of miles to travel than another way we could have gone, over two passes. The inflammation in my breast had cleared up and I was feeling alright again now, the baby after one upset spell, maybe on account of being allowed to nurse the affected breast was doing quite well now. This last day was traveled over the beautiful country around Gunnison Colorado where my father had been born. Then on down over Blue Mesa to Montrose Colorado our destination. We were well past Gunnison when sundown came, though some miles from home, we decided to continue on, the moon was full and bright, making the headlights look dim and hardly needed, about half way across Blue Mesa we hit a rock with one front tire and cut a hole in the side, Joe was able to repair it by using a piece of the canvas we used for side curtains for a boot to protect the inner tube. These cars used what was called a clincher rim, the tire fit tight enough to hold the canvas tight and it worked to keep the tube from pinching. The baby was restless and cried all the time we were stopped, making Joe nervous, it was cold and maybe he missed the motion of the car when we weren’t moving, when we started on he became quiet again. One front headlight went out but the moonlight was very bright, we did not travel fast and met no one. Before midnight we pulled into the yard of Joe’s folks, now they could see the new grandson they’d been waiting to see.

December the final month of 2005 is here, along with the first of our real winter snow, we have been lucky so far in having it strung out where it is only inches deep, I suppose later on it will be piling up deep enough where I can use our little ATV snow plow?
We have not been doing to much this month but keeping a little closer to the stove and dreaming about things we could have done earlier when it was warmer and drier. we both keep busy somewhat with some of our favorite things such as my endeavor to learn as much as I can about the various modes of painting, which I thoroughly enjoy.
Laurie is always busy in the kitchen putting something together like healthy cookies, making custard or some kind of soup now that it's what we call soup weather, also she cuts coupons from the daily paper we get along with any magazine that she can find them in, or has her nose stuck in a book or article concerning health or natural healing, which is one of her favorite subjects.
Be sure and drop by if you are in our neighborhood, until next time

Weather Information

"A look at some of the weather we are having."

November was a magical month with several snow-fall's of an inch or so, and winter like weather setting in for sure.  We have had some real slick roads due to black ice this past month and a jeep slid off the road near Somers hitting and breaking a utility pole that was replaced within a few hours.
The deer are still passing back and forth through our front yard and I see tracks in the snow of all kinds of critters!
