( By Martha Ellsworth)

Now everything was back together, without trying to start the engine to see if it would run, he set to work fixing the body to hold our belongings and be covered over, It was called a touring car model with two seats and a top that could be folded down to the back, the covering had rotted but the frames were in fair condition. I will say Joe had a lot of good sense when it came to repairing anything, so he was able to do a good job putting new material on the top, we had no side curtains to close the wind or weather out, so he made some, not like the commercial kind but it did the job, even a place to extend his left hand to give a turn signal, he made a little removable door to close this when not in use.
The nights were getting much cooler and some of the trees were taking on fall colors. Our old black dog Mitts, which I had before I was married, knew something was going on and followed us closely as we went about packing things into places we had decided to carry them in, it was surprising though we had no suitcases how everything fit, there was even room for old Mitts in the corner of the back seat. Joe had cut the metal down each side of the back of the front seat, so it could be laid back to fill in the space to make our bed, we knew it would be to cold to sleep outside with the young baby, the dog could sleep under the car when we went to bed. To make our meals we would cook over a campfire or when we found a park where a kitchen or place to cook was provided we could use it. People were allowed to do this in the early days of motor travel. Now it was time to get the motor started, the car was tied behind his uncles lumber wagon and the team was hitched to pull them both, I don’t know how far they had to go before they finally got it to run, they had been gone most of the afternoon when Joe was able to drive the car back followed by the team and wagon.
It seamed to be running OK, so we decided while it was going and we were already loaded we would start out and use it a while to break it in so we would not have trouble starting it later. It seamed that is how to do a motor that had just been overhauled, I remember that the parts of this one were even rusty, from laying around in the yard. It didn’t take long to say our final goodbyes and I took a pillow on my lap, to make a bed for our little son Ken. The sun was still above the horizon as we left the yard, Joe had made sure the lights were working, very dim of coarse as there was no battery, the lights got their power from the magneto that furnished power to the ignition. There was a set of four coils, one for each sparkplug that was part of the ignition, they along with the magnets on the flywheel supplied spark and electricity when the crank was turned or the motor was running. I suppose it was not to complicated if one understood what it was all about.
The old country roads were well laid out but very rough, no one was able to go very fast, I have no idea now how far we had gone, maybe a couple of hours had passed and as we had to climb through some hills we needed to use the low gear which happened when you pushed in on the pedal on the left side, of the three little pedals on the floor in front of the drivers feet, so far we had not had to use any of them but very little, the middle pedal was for reverse and the other was the brake. If a hill was to steep for high gear then low was used and you pushed in the pedal and very slowly went ahead. Of coarse the friction on the band heated the rubber from the old tire we had used for lining on the band and melted it, consequently no band! It was to dark to see much so we made our bed ate supper from our supplies we had with us, then went to bed, it was to dark to do anything else.
I breast fed the baby which was a big help, we had a kerosene lantern to use as the wind would not blow it out when we needed to see, we were not used to bright lights at night time anyway, we could find out what to do in the morning, I believed Joe would know what to do and did not worry, my job was to care for the baby. .

This month of November has started with a noticeable cooler daytime temperature, I'm sure it is trying to tell us Winter is near. The bear we chased away from the back deck returned while we were gone to California and left his claw marks on some of the deck railing where he was trying to get up on the deck where we feed our wild bird friends, we have decided to stop feeding birds until later when we think the bears have denned up for the winter.
We did have a really great trip South this fall, we stopped in our usual halfway spot in Ontario Oregon just West of Hwy,95 & across the Snake River which divides Oregon and Idaho at that spot on the map, we went on South the next day ending up at niece Wendy Butler's in Lovelock Nevada for the night, after a night's rest and a great visit we all met more relatives and set down for a super breakfast at a nice restaurant in the south end of Reno Nevada.
That day we ended up about 3 or 4 miles North of Reno at our daughter Pamela and husband Kenny's home where we spent the next two nights, what a nice time we had there. We continued on over Donner Pass in the Sierra's after our stay at Pam's, to Alta Sierra just below Grass Valley Calif. to the home of another daughter Heidi and her family where we stayed several wonderful days until our return back to our place in Montana.
Be sure and drop by if you are in our neighborhood, until next time
