(“The Old man of the Woods”)

Rugged and dark the huge old pine stood
Alone at the edge of a conifer wood
On his wide limbs the squirrels all sat
Dropping their nutshells to a pine-needle mat.

He was just an old tree, who was out of his luck
On his side was a scar where lightning had struck
His top was all fuzzed by a wind from the west
And on his most sheltered bough a bird had it’s nest.

A tough gnarled root, washed clear by the rain
Looked for the world like a varicose vein
On his trunk if you peered, on a day wrapped in haze
Was the guiding white wound of a deep trail blaze.

If one climbed to his heights from the safety of ground
The land could be seen for miles around
To the old tree life was no mystery
He had seen in his time a volume of history.

Time had done something that seemed a great shame
It weakened his roots and made him quite lame
Then the wind came along with a powerful roar
And he reclined with a groan to the soft forest floor.

Now in winter he is covered with a blanket of white
Away from the winds that moan, howl & bite
In spring he is bathed by the softest of showers
And perfume in his bath by the fresh woodland flowers.

Then when the spring into summer has run
He just lies and basks in the warmth of the sun
Fall leaves drift down in their depth he is lost
Snug, safe and warm from the etchings of frost.

He’s a mound in the snow to this very day
Covered by tracks from snow rabbits at play
O,er leaped by a stag, in a flight of wild fear
He’s still part of the forest, which I hold so dear.

Since last months Scuttlebutt (the Larch/Tamarack, a tree that grows here in North West Montana that turns a brilliant yellow in the fall then drops it's needles as winter sets in.) is about mid way in this spectacular seasonal process.   As for the rest of the trees that lose their leaves in winter, well most of them are already down and waiting to be raked and hauled off.
Just north of our little town of Somers, about a 1/4 of a mile is a busy intersection on hwy.93 and Hwy. 83, where the state is in the process of installing a much needed traffic light, which will make a much safer croswsing for all.
Laurie and I were in Kalispell the other day to walk through Woodland Park there were a great variety of birds with some of them being fed by local visitors, what a tangle of birds trying to be on hand for the feed.   We have almost all our winters wood in the mudroom now where we store it for winter, a couple more trips will finish this important job, we also had our supplier come out and top off the propane tank this should get us through until spring rolls around.

Be sure and drop by if you are in our neighborhood, until next time

Weather Information

"A look at some of the weather we are having."

"Golly our weather here continues to be mild for this time of year, I can't tell you that it is unusual as each year mother nature seems to take hold and do things that seem different from the last.   What I can say though it seems there is less moisture than usual.
I was looking north from where we live last week and could see the ski trails on "Big Mountain Ski Resort" starting to fill with a new layer of snow, I don't know if it will last until the next storm but it does look nice up there.
