"Moving back to Colorado after a year in Kansas"

"Note Mom was calling Dad "Joe" this early in their marriage, in later years she called him "Mike",
( By Martha Ellsworth)

We had spent the summer at the home of my husband Joe’s Foster aunt and uncle in South-western Kansas, they were getting on in years and a helping hand with work around the little farm was welcome. Joe had spent some of his years growing up here and knew pretty well how things were done. Our oldest son Kenneth was born in the beginning of Fall, we had planned to go back to Colorado where we were married after our child was born, people do strange things at times perhaps and what I want to tell you was one of them. We had worked for a man putting in his crops in the spring and took a 1917 model “T” Ford for pay, it was only ten years old and we thought it a fair deal, besides Joe understood mechanics and would be able to fix anything that went wrong.
About the middle of the summer Joe decided he would overhaul the engine and have it in shape to drive back to Colorado. He took the motor completely out of the chassis and laid it on the ground under some walnut trees in the back yard, he had cans and pans and a number of places he put the parts as he took them off, finally he had it completely torn down. It was a wet summer and it rained frequently, most everything laid out in the open, he covered the block, pan and all he could with the hood to protect them from the rain, as the cylinder bores were open after he removed the pistons. It needed new piston rings he said before it could be put back together, we had no money to buy them so time passed, with all those parts scattered about the yard, the chickens that ran lose scratched and covered up some of the smaller bolts and nuts.
The corn needed cultivating so he was helping with that for several weeks. I had helped plant a garden and it grew better than usual with the extra rain this year giving us fresh vegetables in abundance, the hens laid well and there was several cows to milk, the extra butter eggs and milk that we had was taken to town every week to trade for things we needed that we didn’t grow. There was always plenty to eat. The setting hens hatched young chickens that grew up for meat, they always raised hogs to butcher and cure the meat for winter, in the smoke house. I was busy getting ready for the arrival of my baby and had not paid much attention to thinking about the trip we planned to make, until after our son was a few weeks old. A letter came from Joes mother in Colorado urging us to come and soon, before winter came in the mountains we would have to cross, I began to wonder how we could go now with the car we had, all in pieces, she sent some money to make the trip and a little extra, Joe began to dig around and collect the parts that were well scattered by now, I knew he would never find them all, I couldn’t help for I had a baby now to look after.
His uncle drove to town with the team and wagon for his weekly trip and Joe went along and got piston rings and gaskets, he was really getting busy now to get that engine back together, it took a while but would you believe he found all those parts and after a couple of weeks he had it all back together, it was all a mystery to me, as I’d stand and watch as the baby took a nap. A neighbor came to help put it back in the chassis where it belonged, Joe said the lining on the brake bands in the planetary transmission were worn out, the lining was made of a woven looking material which looked very much like an old casing of a tire if it was cut through, he had an old tire and decided to use that. He carefully measured and cut the new band lining s just right and fastened them on with rivets of some kind, they went in alright and seemed to fit.

Well, October has slipped in here almost unnoticed, and has brought with it the start of our real fall colors, I am always so pleased to see what wonderful shades the leaves on the trees and bushes turn, each year brings a different display of natures artistry.  We as mentioned last month are working to move the winters wood into the wood room, which in our home is a part of the room we use as a "Mud" room and this winters wood is well over half moved in.  We had a visitor last month, it was a three quarter grown "Black-Bear" Laurie saw him out the livingroom window and he was headed around the house (This is in broad daylight) where we have our bird-feeders, she called to me and I grabbed my 357 mag. pistol and hurried to the back deck just in time to catch him coming around the end of the house, I shouted at him and he took off I then fired into the ground behind him which doubled the speed of his departure, so far he has not put in another appearance.
Be sure and drop by if you are in our neighborhood, until next time

I want to mention that in this month's pictures you will find two pictures of our neighbor "Lorraine Yde" and their Airplane.  Lorraine is a Commercial rated pilot and loves her time in the air, she also works in real-estate in this area and is known in our neighborhood as the "LandLady in a SkyHawk" which is a great name for her.

Weather Information

"A look at some of the weather we are having."

September was a wonderful month this year, we have had many many days of medium heat so great to be out on the bike trail, also to observe the wonders of nature around us.
We have had in the last week or so of September a few early mornings of frost which helps set the stage for better fall color, it also signals the end of the growing season.  We both are looking forward to yet another winter, as all winters we look on are special to us.
